A frequently asked question from our customers whose employees work overnight shifts relates to how time for these shifts is reported. Timesheet Mobile offers several options to account for and display times worked for overnight shifts and these are explained in this note.
Actual
Actual is the default setting for accounting and displaying overnight shifts. When the Overnight Shift Hours setting is set to "Actual", employee hours will be calculated and displayed based on the day the hours were worked. Take the case of an employee whose shift starts at 3:30 PM on Wednesday 3/1/17 and ends at 8:30 AM on Thursday 3/2/17. The total shift length is a whopping 17 hours, displayed as 8.5 hours (or 8:30 if you select hh:mm time setting) on 3/1/17 and 8.5 hours on 3/2/17.
Day Started
In the same example, if Overnight Shift Hours are set to "Day Started", all 17 hours of the shift are reported on the day the shift began - Wednesday 3/1/17 in this example.
Day Ended
Finally, if Overnight Shift Hours are set to "Day Ended", all 17 hours of the shift are reported on the day the shift ended - Thursday 3/2/17 in this example.
It is worth noting that in the example above that a Daily Overtime Threshold of 9 hours is used and that hours over this value are reported as overtime. If you are required to pay overtime hours based on both daily and weekly values, you should use either Day Started or Day Ended since Actual will not automatically calculate the total hours in relation to daily overtime thresholds.
